8 Ways you can support your local Rugby club

Grassroots rugby is built on community. While players put in the work on the pitch and volunteers grind behind the scenes, clubs thrive when the wider community rallies behind them. The truth is, you don’t have to be a player to make a huge difference. Every little action helps strengthen your local rugby family. Even better, most of those actions don’t even involve spending money.

Here are some simple yet powerful ways you can support your club today:

1. Engage on Social Media

This is one of the easiest, if not THE easiest, ways to help your club or any club for that matter. Give your club’s posts a like, share, or comment. It may seem small, but online engagement helps spread rugby’s story to new audiences and keeps the club visible in the community. Social media algorithms work better with engagements. The more you engage, the wider the reach your club builds. It also does not cost anything to do it. Get to clicking!

2. Donate and Patronize Club Facilities

Whether it’s contributing to a fundraiser, grabbing a meal or drink at the clubhouse, or renting facilities for an event, your support directly fuels the club’s growth and sustainability. Grassroots rugby clubs need the support of their community to sustain and grow. Membership dues alone aren’t enough to cover club expenses.

3. Share Your Rugby Story

This goes hand in hand with #1 on the list. Positive stories matter. Post about your rugby experiences, share what the sport has meant to you, and celebrate the friendships and memories. Your voice inspires others to get involved. When you’re doing it, make sure to tag the clubs where you had these experiences. Spread the rugby love and encourage others to get involved!

4. Wear the Colors with Pride

Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love some great club kit? Pick up some kit, put it on, and wear it out and about. It’s not just clothing—it’s a walking conversation starter and a proud symbol of the club’s presence in your town. You are a walking advertisement for your club.

5. Invite Friends to an Event

Bring along someone who’s never been to a rugby match or social. Many people fall in love with the sport after experiencing the camaraderie and atmosphere firsthand. Touch rugby is a fantastic way to introduce people to the sport, but it is an even better way to introduce them to other people. People are statistically more likely to remain involved in sports where they make friends.

6. Support Club Sponsors

I cannot stress this point enough. Local businesses often go the extra mile for grassroots rugby. Return the favor by spending money with them and letting them know the club sent you. It shows sponsors their investment is valued. With finances tight in many areas, sponsors are looking for mutually beneficial relationships.

7. Cheer Loud, Cheer Proud

There’s nothing like hearing the roar of supporters from the sidelines. Show up on match day, clap, cheer, and celebrate every moment—the players feel it, and it makes a difference when it comes to the recruitment and retention of players.

8. Share Events and Posts

Spread the word by sharing club announcements or match events on your own pages. Every share extends the reach and brings rugby into new circles. Every club needs their members to hype up events online or in their local community.

Grassroots rugby is more than a game—it’s a community, a family, and a movement that grows stronger with every helping hand. Whether you’re a coach, volunteer, player, a parent, or simply a fan, your involvement matters. Together, we can keep rugby thriving from the bottom of the ruck all the way to the top.

Choose Rugby

Most of us don’t choose rugby the first time — we stumble into it. But once it gets its hooks in you, it becomes a decision you keep making. On cold nights, sore days, chaotic weeks, and when the club needs you. Rugby isn’t just a sport. It’s belonging.
